Stevo J. RAČIĆ
STEVAN STEVO RAČIĆ, son of JEREMIJA, born on October 1, 1921, in Zijemlje near Mostar. A trade assistant, member of the Communist Party of Yugoslavia (KPJ) since 1941, in the Battalion from September 1941. After the Chetnik coup in June 1942, he worked as a political worker in the Zijemlje area, where Jovan Račić also operated. Thanks to the two of them, doubts grew among the Chetnik ranks in relation to the Partisans. A platoon commissar. He died in Pijesci near Mostar in October 1944.
Circumstances of Stevo’s death:
“The positions of the ‘Green Line’ on the left bank of the Neretva River were defended, from October 28 to November 2, by the combat group ‘Timel’ and the 1st Battalion of the 738th Regiment of the 118th Hunter Division. These approximately 1,000 soldiers, with several tanks and strong mortar and artillery fire support, persistently defended the Pijesci-Gubavica area. At the same time, the 118th Reconnaissance Battalion conducted daily raids from Blagaj towards Kamena to support the forces near Pijesak. In the five-day battles with this enemy, the units of the 13th Brigade daily attacked the enemy or repelled their counterattacks. On November 2, the enemy withdrew to the Buna area (Mostar field), so the units of the 13th Brigade, on the same day, occupied the line G. Vranjevići-Gubavica-Pijesci-Počitelj and, together with the units of the 12th Brigade, established a connected front across the Neretva River near Slipčići, in front of the enemy’s ‘Green Line.’ During the pursuit from Stolac to Gubavica, the 13th Brigade had 8 soldiers killed and 23 wounded” (among the casualties was Stevo Račić from Zijemlje).
