Krsto M. JOKANOVIĆ
KRSTO JOKANOVIĆ, son of MITAR, born on September 18, 1925, in Malo Polje near Mostar, farmer. Joined the People’s Liberation Army and Partisan Detachments of Yugoslavia in April 1944 in the Savo Belović Detachment. Killed as a fighter of the 3rd Battalion of the 13th Herzegovinian Brigade on March 1, 1945, in Ostrožac near Konjic*.
EXCERPT FROM LITERATURE:
“The resistance in the city center, around the railway station, was broken at 7 p.m. after the fighters of the 13th Brigade crossed the river on a ferry to the right bank of the Neretva, thus directly threatening the barricaded soldiers and Ustasha. As a result, the main part of the enemy garrison broke through to Konjic. Out of 300 killed soldiers and 34 captured, the 13th Brigade killed 170 and captured 10, seizing 3 mortars, 8 machine guns, and 70 rifles. Besides twenty wounded, the Brigade had twelve casualties (the 10th Brigade had 4 killed and 8 wounded), among whom, alongside Husein Sefa and Vlado Šukić, were fighters of the 3rd Battalion: Milan Borovac, Krsto Jokanović, Radovan Kešelj, Mirza Kudra, Zaharija Vukalović, Bećir Tikveša, Mujo Fazlić, and Ratko Stević. Thus, the 3rd Battalion lost 16 fighters and leaders during the battles around Ostrožac in just a few days, which was its heaviest loss in a single battle during the war.”
*The place of death is Ostrožac according to the information from the book “Spomenica Mostara 1941-1945.”
