Šerif R. HUSREFOVIĆ
ŠERIF HUSREFOVIĆ ŠIPAK, son of MUHAREM*, born on August 14, 1921, in Mostar. He was a football player for FC “Velež.” He became a member of the Communist Youth League (SKOJ) in 1939 and the Communist Party of Yugoslavia (KPJ) in 1940. After the September demonstrations in 1940 in Mostar, he went to Smederevska Palanka to avoid arrest, where he found employment. He joined the 1st Partisan Šumadija Detachment in 1941 and became a fighter. As a wounded person in the partisan hospital, he was captured in Savinac near Gornji Milanovac in Serbia and taken to Ravna Gora*, where he was killed in November 1941. (*According to some sources, he was delivered to the German army which executed him along the others in November 1941.)
About Šerif, it was said:
“… among the fighters, he enjoyed great respect and popularity, just like he did on the football field. They admired his courage, his stature. He was a true warrior. He never needed many words to describe an action. He never boasted about his successes; he carried everything out calmly, entering clashes with great faith and confidence.”
Šerif was one of the 77 Velež players to whom a monument was dedicated at the stadium under Bijeli Brijeg.
A street in Mostar is named after Šerić Husrefović.
*According to the data from the book “Spomenica Mostara 1941-1945.”, his father’s initial starts with the letter M.
