SAVO (MITRA) ŠKORO, born on February 18, 1922, in Bačevići near Mostar. Farmer. He joined the People’s Liberation Army and Partisan Detachments (NOV i POJ) in July 1944 in the 2nd Battalion of the 10th Hercegovina Brigade. Member of the Communist Party of Yugoslavia (KPJ) and a political delegate of the unit. He died in the final operations of the Yugoslav Army on May 5, 1945, in the village of Harije near Ilirska Bistrica*.
EXCERPT FROM LITERATURE:
“On May 5th, the Brigade was tasked with cutting off and destroying the enemy wedge that had advanced to the village of Harije, west of Bistrica. However, due to the negligence of the 2nd Battalion’s headquarters (…) during the night, the enemy inserted one battalion behind the front lines and attacked the unsecured brigade reserve (2nd Battalion) in the village of Brdce. The intervention of the small Reconnaissance Unit of the Brigade prevented a complete defeat and enabled the remaining Battalion to break through. No task during the Brigade’s existence was paid with more losses than this one. Fifty-four fighters and officers lost their lives in it. There were perhaps twice as many wounded.”
