Mustafa M. KANJE
MUSTAFA KANJE, son of MEHMED, born on April 18, 1910, in Mostar, a driver and a pre-war activist of the workers’ movement, joined the Battalion in early 1942. He was a fighter and was killed in Janjina near Konjic in April 1942 in the unit of Ante Zuanić. In the same battle where the ratio was almost 20 to one, Husnija Kanje also lost his life. One of them was the first to fall, and the other Kanje, wounded, fired his last bullet at himself to avoid falling into the hands of the enemy.
There is a Kanjina street in Mostar, possibly named after members of this family.
Excerpt:
“The column of militia and gendarmes, crossing the Neretva ford, surrounded the house in Janjina before dawn, where our unit was located. The battle began with a numerically superior enemy. The gendarmes and militia called on our fighters to surrender, and they responded with songs and gunfire whenever an enemy appeared. In that house, the following individuals were killed: HUSNIJA KANJE, a gardener, and MUSTAFA KANJE, a worker, both from Mostar.”
