Mirko R. MATRAK
MIRKO MATRAK, son of RISTO, born on March 28, 1914, in Gnojnica near Mostar. Seasonal worker, pre-war activist of the workers’ movement, member of the Communist Party of Yugoslavia. According to family memories, “he had the nickname Plećko because he was sturdy, with broad shoulders.” He served in the navy in the Bay of Kotor. Joined the Battalion at the end of 1941, “where he went from the Kreso family’s house in Donja Mahala.” Fighter, killed in the battles of Sutjeska in June 1943.
Remembered as “exceptionally humane; even though he worked for daily wages, on one occasion he took off the shirt he bought for himself and gave it as a gift to a poor Catholic neighbor.” (source: family tradition)
