Ibro M. FRKO
IBRAHIM M. FRKO, born on September 11, 1923, in Mostar, a student at the Gymnasium in Mostar, a member of SKOJ since 1941. He joined the Battalion at the beginning of 1942 and served as a fighter (machine gunner). He was killed in Trijebovo near Mrkonjić Grad in December 1942 as a member of the 1st Battalion of the 10th Herzegovina Brigade.
One memory has been recorded about the circumstances of Ibrahim Frko’s death:
“And in December, the battalion spent time outside the brigade’s structure. It moved to the territory of Mrkonjić Grad in order to clear the area of Chetnik groups descending from Manjača. Those Chetniks behaved strangely. During the day, they would flee like wild animals, and at night they would gather above the villages and open fire with rifles and mortars. One day, we almost missed capturing the Chetnik vojvoda Drenović himself from a hamlet near Trijebovo. They seriously attacked us only once, in the middle of the night. Three companies and the battalion headquarters found themselves in a critical situation, surrounded. They captured several fighters, including two female comrades. One of them, a girl from Livno who had just joined the battalion, tried to escape from the Chetniks by disguising herself in the uniform of one of them during the night, according to the accounts of the captured and later freed fighters. She did not succeed; they caught her and killed her. We liberated the remaining comrades the next day. Ibrahim Frko was killed in these clashes with the Chetniks, and Vaso Starović lost his arm (…).”
Ibro’s name was recorded on the memorial plaque at the Mostar Gymnasium after the war (source). The plaque disappeared without a trace during the war events of 1992-1995.
