Džemal M. FEJIĆ
SALIH DŽEMAL FEJlĆ, son of MUHAMED, born in 1912* in Mostar, a merchant. Member of the Communist Party of Yugoslavia (KPJ), a veteran fighter, and in the Battalion since the beginning of 1942, serving as the squad’s economic officer. He survived the Fifth Offensive at Sutjeska and returned to Mostar for recovery along with 80 other fighters. Afterward, he resumed his participation in the fight. As a fighter, he served in the 17th Krajina Brigade as an intendant from May 1944. He died in Ostrošac near Jablanica in October 1944.*
Džemal is the son of Muhamed and Adila Fejić, one of the five deceased members of this family (his brothers and sister also perished: Ešref, Šefko, Esad, Samija). Two of Džemal’s uncles were killed by Germans (one of them was Dr. Asim Opijač). When Adila Fejić heard the news of her son’s death, according to some records, she “received the news calmly. That’s how she was. She said, ‘If I start crying, people will run away from me…’” One of the most famous streets in Mostar bears the name of the Fejić brothers. The well-known song “Mostarska mati” by Mostarske kiše is dedicated to Džemal’s mother, Adila Fejić. You can read about the conversation that Mišo Marić published with his mother Adila in 1972 here.
*According to the “Spomenica Mostara 1941-1945,” Džemal was born on December 1, 1913.
