VRGORA"},"content":{"rendered":"<!-- wp:themify-builder\/canvas \/-->\n\n\n<p>ZIJAD ZIJO VRGORA, son of HASAN, born on November 8, 1925,* in Mostar, student of the Gymnasium, member of the League of Communist Youth (SKOJ) since 1942, in the National Liberation Army and Partisan Detachments since July 1943, in the Mostar Youth Detachment, and from July 1943, in the Mostar Battalion. He was a fighter and was killed in Kamena* near Mostar in July 1943. His brother <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" title=\"D\u017eevad Vrgora\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" href=\"https:\/\/partizansko.info\/en\/partizan\/dzevad-h-vrgora\/\">D\u017eevad Vrgora<\/a> was arrested at that time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Circumstances of Zijad&#8217;s death, as recorded:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;In the dawn of July 5th, thanks to the betrayal that was never determined, the Detachment was surrounded by soldiers from the 7th SS Division &#8216;Princ Eugen,&#8217; who unleashed a hurricane of machine gun and automatic fire at the fighters who were sleeping before the guard could sound the alarm. Chaos ensued among the bewildered and inexperienced fighters. Anyone who rose to their feet was mowed down by gunfire or wounded if they did not surrender to the shouts of &#8216;Halt!&#8217; Individuals and small groups managed to crawl away thanks to the uneven terrain, shrubs, and woods, as well as the scattered nature of the groups. Eighteen of them managed to escape the encirclement, which was not completely sealed in certain places. During this incident, 10 fighters were killed: <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" title=\"BORO RADAN\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" href=\"https:\/\/partizansko.info\/en\/partizan\/borivoje-p-radan\/\">BORO RADAN<\/a>, the Detachment&#8217;s commissar, a student from Mostar, <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" title=\"MUSTAFA BULJKO\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" href=\"https:\/\/partizansko.info\/en\/partizan\/mustafa-h-buljko\/\">MUSTAFA BULJKO<\/a>, the deputy commissar, a gardener from Mostar, <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" title=\"NAZIF D\u017dEPO\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" href=\"https:\/\/partizansko.info\/en\/partizan\/nazif-a-dzepo\/\">NAZIF D\u017dEPO<\/a>, a student from Mostar, <a href=\"https:\/\/partizansko.info\/en\/partizan\/rizah-s-hadzimahmutovic\/\" data-type=\"partizan\" data-id=\"2021\">RIZAH HAD\u017dlMAHMUTOVI\u0106<\/a>, a student from Mostar, <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" title=\"SAFET KURTOVI\u0106\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" href=\"https:\/\/partizansko.info\/en\/partizan\/safet-c-kurtovic\/\">SAFET KURTOVI\u0106<\/a>, a student from Mostar, <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" title=\"MARTA PAVI\u0106\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" href=\"https:\/\/partizansko.info\/en\/partizan\/marta-r-pavic\/\">MARTA PAVI\u0106<\/a>, a student from Mostar, <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" title=\"ALIJA SALKOVI\u0106\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" href=\"https:\/\/partizansko.info\/en\/partizan\/alija-h-salkovic\/\">ALIJA SALKOVI\u0106<\/a>, a worker from Mostar, AVDO TATAREVI\u0106, a student from Stolac, ZIJAD VRGORA, a student from Mostar, and DU\u0160AN VUJI\u010cI\u0106, a worker from Sarajevo.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the archives of Radmilo Braca Andri\u0107, the remains of Zijad Vrgora were transferred and buried in the Partisan Memorial Cemetery in Mostar. Zijad&#8217;s name was recorded on a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.most.ba\/091\/015.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">memorial plaque<\/a> at the Mostar Gymnasium after the war. Until the formation of the 13th Herzegovina Brigade in May 1944, 827 fighters passed through the Battalion, and 445 of them perished, including 211 from Mostar. Of the 86 women, 43 were killed. Mostar residents also fought in many other units of the NOVJ (People's Liberation Army of Yugoslavia) and among the ranks of the activists of the National Liberation War in Mostar and other cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina... According to the records of the organization SUBNOR Mostar, every third citizen was an activist of the National Liberation War, 670 fighters were killed, 1517 were victims of fascist terror, and 206 were civilian war victims. Those of us who were 17, 18 years old, some seemed old even though they were not older than 25. The ones over 30 were rare. There were girls and boys with different characteristics and temperaments, robust and calm, talkative and silent, recklessly brave and rational, ordinary and above-average, semi-literate and university-educated, workers and highly skilled craftsmen, high school students and university students, skilled singers and those who couldn't carry a tune, jokers and serious-minded individuals. From all our nations and religions: Muslims, Croats, Serbs, Jews, Orthodox Christians, Catholics, Muslims, Jews, atheists, and semi-atheists. Some were from straight from Mostar and others from the surrounding locations, from Konjic and outside Konjic.\" (Hercegovina Magazine No. 7, p. 238)\r\n\r\nGroups of new fighters arrived from Mostar every 10-15 days, and the Unit quickly grew into a solid military force. The guides for the groups from Mostar were Mehmed Arap, Vasa Maslo, Serif Buri\u0107, Husa Orman, Vojo Ivani\u0161evi\u0107, and Pero Krajina, who were among the bravest and most resourceful fighters. The groups regularly brought not only weapons but also medical supplies, sugar for the hospital, writing materials, large quantities of paper, books taken from the National Library (which formed the library at Borci), and other supplies for the needs of the Unit.
