D\u017dEM\u0160ID D\u017dEM\u0160O \u0160ARI\u0106, son of HUSEIN, born on March 15, 1912, in Mostar. He completed his studies at the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade, becoming a professor of French language and literature, and an intellectual Marxist. He was a prominent pre-war activist in the circles of progressive Mostar intelligentsia, particularly in the Muslim People’s Library, which operated under the influence of the Communist Party of Yugoslavia (KPJ), where he served as a member of the board of directors. He worked in Boljevac and Podgorica, and from 1939 in the Gymnasium in Mostar. He was dismissed from his position on September 30, 1940, after which he worked as the supervisor of Gajret’s male dormitory in Mostar. Fleeing from the Ustasha persecution as a communist, he was captured at Bivolje Brdo and brutally killed by the Ustasha in early July 1941. According to his mother’s words, he was “thrown alive into a pit” along with his comrades, referring to the Golubinka pit in Pijesci near Mostar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
D\u017eem\u0161id is one of the three professors whose names were recorded on a memorial plaque<\/a> at Mostar Gymnasium after the war. The plaque disappeared without a trace during the war events of 1992-1995. Three of his brothers also lost their lives in the National Liberation War: Ismet \u0160ari\u0107<\/a>, Nijaz \u0160ari\u0107<\/a> and Hidajet \u0160ari\u0107<\/a>.
