EMIR PA\u0160I\u0106, son of ZAJKO, born on February 13, 1922, in Mostar, a student of the Commercial Academy. A member of the League of Communist Youth (SKOJ), a fighter in the 2nd Battalion of the 13th Herzegovinian Brigade, a political delegate of the 1st Platoon of the 2nd Battalion, and a passionate photo-reporter. Seriously wounded in successive assaults on Mount Rogalj (Ivan Planina) on March 6, 1945. In an attempt to save him and the wounded machine gunner Toma Kraji\u0161nik, three nurses, one next to the other, were killed: Zdenka Kara\u010di\u0107<\/a>, a nurse of the Second Battalion, Ljubica Remeti\u0107 from the village of Biograd near Nevesinje, a sanitary officer of the Fourth Battalion, and Emina Merdan from Po\u010ditelj, a nurse of the Second Battalion. They were killed “at the Dragalj position, above the mountain pass at Ivan Saddle, in front of enemy bunkers, fifty-something meters away from the positions held by the 13th Brigade battalions.” The symbolism of these deaths resonated for a long time within the battalion, as well as after the war, through numerous stories: “the feat of Zdenka, Emina, and Ljubica remained a symbol of blood-sealed brotherhood and unity of our three peoples<\/em>.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mensur Seferovi\u0107 published an article about that event many years after the war. Lutvo D\u017eubur wrote about it in an article titled “The Three of Them”, published in the newspaper of the 13th Brigade, “Hercegova\u010dki borac” (Herzegovinian Fighter):<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The first one to go was Ljubica. She reached the wounded comrade and pulled him back. Just at that moment when she thought the task was accomplished, that the comrade was saved, Ljubica collapsed in the snow, hit by a shot in the stomach. Zdenka and Emina, who were attentively watching Ljubica’s attempt from their cover, knew what their duty was now. No orders were needed. Conscience is stronger than anything. They rushed towards Ljubica and the wounded comrade, not thinking about the danger and ignoring the enemy bullets that were tearing through the snow around them. But\u2026 the villainous eye had aimed well. Zdenka fell, hit in the head, and right beside her, Emina, hit in the chest. The three young women from Herzegovina lay motionless side by side. Strong jets of blood soaked the snow and colored it with a beautiful blush in the sunlight. And the lives of three young people gradually faded away on the first hill in Bosnia.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Until the formation of the 13th Herzegovina Brigade in May 1944, 827 fighters passed through the Battalion, and 445 of them perished, including 211 from Mostar. Of the 86 women, 43 were killed. Mostar residents also fought in many other units of the NOVJ (People's Liberation Army of Yugoslavia) and among the ranks of the activists of the National Liberation War in Mostar and other cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina... According to the records of the organization SUBNOR Mostar, every third citizen was an activist of the National Liberation War, 670 fighters were killed, 1517 were victims of fascist terror, and 206 were civilian war victims. D\u017eemil \u0160arac, article \"Sa Mostarcima\" (\"With the People from Mostar\"), Hercegovina No. 9, p. 221.\r\n\r\n\"And we were all young. Those of us who were 17, 18 years old, some seemed old even though they were not older than 25. The ones over 30 were rare. There were girls and boys with different characteristics and temperaments, robust and calm, talkative and silent, recklessly brave and rational, ordinary and above-average, semi-literate and university-educated, workers and highly skilled craftsmen, high school students and university students, skilled singers and those who couldn't carry a tune, jokers and serious-minded individuals. From all our nations and religions: Muslims, Croats, Serbs, Jews, Orthodox Christians, Catholics, Muslims, Jews, atheists, and semi-atheists. Some were from straight from Mostar and others from the surrounding locations, from Konjic and outside Konjic.\" (Hercegovina Magazine No. 7, p. 238)\r\n\r\nGroups of new fighters arrived from Mostar every 10-15 days, and the Unit quickly grew into a solid military force. The guides for the groups from Mostar were Mehmed Arap, Vasa Maslo, Serif Buri\u0107, Husa Orman, Vojo Ivani\u0161evi\u0107, and Pero Krajina, who were among the bravest and most resourceful fighters. The groups regularly brought not only weapons but also medical supplies, sugar for the hospital, writing materials, large quantities of paper, books taken from the National Library (which formed the library at Borci), and other supplies for the needs of the Unit.
