OSKAR MANDELBAUM, born on May 23, 1909, in Mostar, son of \u017dIGMUND (SIGMUND) and MALVINA Mandelbaum. He was a locksmith, a football player for “Vele\u017e,” and “one of the most important players in the period between the two World Wars.” He was an activist in the revolutionary workers’ movement and a member of the Communist Party of Yugoslavia (KPJ). He was arrested by the Ustashe in July 1941 in Mostar and taken away and killed. According to one source, Oskar was “stopped by a certain Ustasha named Ali\u0107 on the way with his mother Malvina, as they were going to visit relatives on the other side of the city. He was arrested and taken to the ‘Queen Maria’ Elementary School. From there, he was deported to the Gospi\u0107 camp and then to the Jadovno camp, where he was killed.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His father Sigmund and brother Henrih, as well as many other relatives, also perished in the Holocaust. Oskar Mandlbaum is a recipient of the Partisan Memorial 1941. In 1999, a Holocaust memorial was erected at the Jewish cemetery in Mostar, which includes his name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oskar’s father, Sigmund \u017diga Mandelabaum, the owner of the Bosnian Inn, was married to Malvina Bohm, with whom he had Oskar, as well as sons Mo\u0161a (1910) and Hajnrih (1913), and a sister named Rosa. Oskar’s grandparents, Jo\u0161ua and Rosa Mandelbaum, came to Mostar from a small Hungarian town near Lake Balaton during the Austro-Hungarian period. Sigmund’s brother Leopold, the owner of a caf\u00e9, restaurant, and hotel named “Neretva,” was married to Nela Gros, with whom he had a daughter named Rosa (1911).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
