LAKATO\u0160\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<!-- wp:themify-builder\/canvas \/-->\n\n\n<p>SUZANA LAKATO\u0160, daughter of NIKOLA*, born on January 29, 1923, in Novi Sad. A student at the Teacher&#8217;s College in Mostar, where she lived with her family. Her father was a musician and played violin in an orchestra at restaurant &#8220;Paris&#8221; in Mostar. A member of SKOJ (League of Communist Youth of Yugoslavia) since 1940 and a member of KPJ (Communist Party of Yugoslavia) since 1941. She joined the Battalion in late 1941 or early 1942 and was in charge or clothing distribution. A fighter, she was executed in April 1942 in Glavati\u010devo by the partisans &#8220;due to love affairs&#8221;. Her execution was ordered by Nenad Vasi\u0107.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two accounts found about Suzana&#8217;s tragic death:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Enver \u0106emalovi\u0107: &#8220;A special case is the story of Suzana Lakato\u0161, a high school graduate from the Teacher&#8217;s College in Mostar, a member of the League of Communists of Yugoslavia (SKJ). Before the war, she attended the Teacher&#8217;s College with Ljubica Mihi\u0107. By nationality, she was Hungarian. She had her own special views on relationships with men. Nenad Vasi\u0107 formed a court that examined her relationship with a company commander. Suzana admitted it but said that it could not be prohibited to her, after which the order was given for her execution. Nenad had absolute power, and none of us could prevent Suzana&#8217;s execution.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In one of Mensur Seferovi\u0107&#8217;s books, there is a brief mention of Suzana:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;Gloomy and completely exhausted, we returned to Mostar, to our hiding places. I spent three days and three nights at Salka Alikalfi\u0107&#8217;s house until December 25, when I left again with my submachine gun to join the unit. At the head of the hurried column, messengers \u0106imba; Vojo Ivani\u0161evi\u0107, followed by Salko Feji\u0107, who had previously been in the battalion, Hamid Drljevi\u0107, the young girls Munevera and Suzana, girls who would soon experience a tragic fate\u2014they would stand before the gun barrels of the battalion&#8217;s fighters, then Vlado Mitrinovi\u0107, who would\u2014accused of being a Chetnik spy\u2014also face the volley of shots, then Sofija, also known as Srbijanka, two Jewish girls from Sarajevo, and their comrade who had a guitar slung over his shoulder\u2026 I dragged myself at the rear of the column, overloaded: I carried a backpack, the only submachine gun in our unit, and ammunition.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>*according to the information in the book &#8220;Spomenica Mostara 1941-1945.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SUZANA LAKATO\u0160, daughter of NIKOLA*, born on January 29, 1923, in Novi Sad. Until the formation of the 13th Herzegovina Brigade in May 1944, 827 fighters passed through the Battalion, and 445 of them perished, including 211 from Mostar. Of the 86 women, 43 were killed. Mostar residents also fought in many other units of the NOVJ (People's Liberation Army of Yugoslavia) and among the ranks of the activists of the National Liberation War in Mostar and other cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina... According to the records of the organization SUBNOR Mostar, every third citizen was an activist of the National Liberation War, 670 fighters were killed, 1517 were victims of fascist terror, and 206 were civilian war victims. Those of us who were 17, 18 years old, some seemed old even though they were not older than 25. The ones over 30 were rare. There were girls and boys with different characteristics and temperaments, robust and calm, talkative and silent, recklessly brave and rational, ordinary and above-average, semi-literate and university-educated, workers and highly skilled craftsmen, high school students and university students, skilled singers and those who couldn't carry a tune, jokers and serious-minded individuals. From all our nations and religions: Muslims, Croats, Serbs, Jews, Orthodox Christians, Catholics, Muslims, Jews, atheists, and semi-atheists. Some were from straight from Mostar and others from the surrounding locations, from Konjic and outside Konjic.\" (Hercegovina Magazine No. 7, p. 238)\r\n\r\nGroups of new fighters arrived from Mostar every 10-15 days, and the Unit quickly grew into a solid military force. The guides for the groups from Mostar were Mehmed Arap, Vasa Maslo, Serif Buri\u0107, Husa Orman, Vojo Ivani\u0161evi\u0107, and Pero Krajina, who were among the bravest and most resourceful fighters. The groups regularly brought not only weapons but also medical supplies, sugar for the hospital, writing materials, large quantities of paper, books taken from the National Library (which formed the library at Borci), and other supplies for the needs of the Unit.
