NIKOLA MIRKO KONJEVOD \u0160KAVO, son of PERO, born on March 24, 1924, in Mostar, worker, football player for “Vele\u017e,” member of SKOJ (League of Communist Youth of Yugoslavia) since 1941, joined the Battalion in July 1943. Fighter, captured at Kamena near Mostar in July 1943, and executed at Ovojci near Mostar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He was remembered as a “strong and tough guy” who tried to protect his wounded comrade from beatings in prison by taking them himself. According to one testimony:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The captured comrades were placed by the Germans in the former Civil School, on the upper floor. D\u017eevad Vrgora<\/a>, upon seeing his father, called him over and threw him a list of captured comrades, which was delivered to the Local Committee. Work began on organizing their rescue, for which a group of young people was responsible. They managed to sneak a stone wrapped in paper into the room of the captured comrades, with a rope tied around it. On the paper was a message to lower the rope at dusk and they would tie a string to it, which they would then pull into the room and use to descend and escape. When Drago Palavestra<\/a> lowered the rope, a German inside the room on the first floor noticed it and raised the alarm. The Germans stormed into our comrades’ room and asked who lowered the rope. Drago immediately spoke up: ‘It was me!’ They started beating Drago, who was physically weak, and then Mirko Konjevod \u0160kavo jumped forward and shouted: ‘He’s lying, it was I who lowered the rope!’ The Germans left Drago and continued beating Mirko, who was a strong and tough guy. During interrogations, all the comrades were brutally beaten, but none of them revealed anyone in the city or their comrades and families ‘on the canal’ through which they escaped to Dubrave. Those of us who were 17, 18 years old, some seemed old even though they were not older than 25. The ones over 30 were rare. There were girls and boys with different characteristics and temperaments, robust and calm, talkative and silent, recklessly brave and rational, ordinary and above-average, semi-literate and university-educated, workers and highly skilled craftsmen, high school students and university students, skilled singers and those who couldn't carry a tune, jokers and serious-minded individuals. From all our nations and religions: Muslims, Croats, Serbs, Jews, Orthodox Christians, Catholics, Muslims, Jews, atheists, and semi-atheists. Some were from straight from Mostar and others from the surrounding locations, from Konjic and outside Konjic.\" (Hercegovina Magazine No. 7, p. 238)\r\n\r\nGroups of new fighters arrived from Mostar every 10-15 days, and the Unit quickly grew into a solid military force. The guides for the groups from Mostar were Mehmed Arap, Vasa Maslo, Serif Buri\u0107, Husa Orman, Vojo Ivani\u0161evi\u0107, and Pero Krajina, who were among the bravest and most resourceful fighters. The groups regularly brought not only weapons but also medical supplies, sugar for the hospital, writing materials, large quantities of paper, books taken from the National Library (which formed the library at Borci), and other supplies for the needs of the Unit.
