RADOJKA RACA GNJATI\u0106-IVANI\u0160EVI\u0106, daughter of RISTO, born on April 22, 1919, in Nevesinje, into a family of pre-war revolutionaries and activists. Her father was a tailor. She completed primary school and two grades of evening trade school. Before the war, she was taken by the communist Nikola Abramovi\u0107<\/a> to learn the trade at the textile factory store “\u0160ik” in Mostar, and she became a sales assistant by profession. She attended classes in Esperanto at the Workers’ Home, participated in demonstrations and union strikes. She appears to have been the wife of the fighter Vasko Gnjati\u0107. Party members would gather at their house, and from there, volunteer units would depart to join the partisans. She became a member of the League of Communist Youth (SKOJ) in 1940 and the Communist Party of Yugoslavia (KPJ) in 1942. She served as a fighter in the battalion from November 1941. She was recorded in 1942 at the partisan tailoring workshop. She survived the Fifth Offensive, the Battle of Sutjeska, and together with 80 other fighters, she returned to Mostar for recovery. She was arrested during a raid for betraying a fellow comrade and was executed in Ovojci near Mostar. She bravely stood her ground in front of the enemy and refused to reveal any fellow fighters: “Raca was asked to do the same as Huskovi\u0107 (a captured partisan who denounced other fighters, ed.). She walked past the machine and her separated comrades with her head held high, full of defiance and tearful eyes. She did not linger in front of anyone, nor did she fix her gaze on anyone, so as not to betray her acquaintances to her followers.<\/em>” She was executed in Ovojci near Mostar on July 10, 1943, along with 40 captured residents of Mostar. She was the sister of bakery worker Vojo Ivani\u0161evi\u0107, the secretary of the food supply union, with whom she fought together at Sutjeska, and Milan Mi\u0107o Ivani\u0161evi\u0107<\/a> (killed near Travnik). She was described as “a noble and courageous partisan, proudly carried the flag of her battalion high, serving as a brilliant emblem, the conscience, and the oath of proletarian Mostar and its battalion.<\/em>“<\/p>\n\n\n\n

True war heroine, she inspired numerous post-war stories and novels, and one film. She was depicted on the cover of the book “Battalion in an Occupied City” by Mensur Seferovi\u0107 (1958).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As remembered by Angelina Dragani\u0107 (Lambi\u0107): <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Raca Ivani\u0161evi\u0107 arrived with the first Mostar communists and SKOJ members as early as 1941. She was beautiful and cheerful. She was a nurse, but she also knew how to work in the kitchen, and even more difficult men’s jobs. She could sing beautifully, and the wounded often asked her to do so. Cheerful as she was, she never refused. She would sing, her voice would spread like a balm around the hospital room, and the wounded would cheer up. Raca’s song would bring them relief. She went through many battles with the Battalion. She also took part in the Fifth offensive at the Sutjeska, and when, worn out and exhausted, she was about to return to Mostar for recovery, she could not avoid ill fate. I remember our parting. She was wearing pants and I was wearing a skirt. And she said to me: – Angela, give me a skirt, I’ll be less conspicuous, I’ll go to Mostar more easily in it. I gave her a skirt, but unfortunately, it didn’t help. She was caught in her native Mostar, imprisoned and tortured. She did not betray any comrade. She died a martyr’s death.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

About Raca’s return from Sutjeska to Mostar, capture, and death:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“When the fighters from Mostar were returning from Sutjeska to Mostar, Raca stayed outside the city, in a group that wanted to go towards Dubrave but couldn’t establish contact. So she reached out to her cousin, Slavko Ivani\u0161evi\u0107, in the village of Laki\u0161evina. He brought her food and peasant clothing, so she changed clothes and came down to Laki\u0161evina. She left Mostar with a group, pretending to go apricot picking in an orchard outside the city. That’s how Raca, along with Smilja and that group, entered the city.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Raca’s arrest is actually a tragic case. Here’s what happened. She was staying in the Luka neighborhood, at Bakari\u0107’s house, which was raided. If the Germans had entered that house, they probably wouldn’t have recognized Raca or arrested her if they found her in bed. She had already gone to bed, wearing her nightgown, when the Gestapo arrived near Bakari\u0107’s house. But Raca thought it would be safer to hide in the basement, so she quickly went downstairs and hid there, still in her nightgown. But the Gestapo arrived there as well. As soon as they saw her in the basement, wearing a nightgown, they found her suspicious and arrested her as the only woman among those captured. Thus, in her nightgown, they brought her to the southern camp with the others. Huskovi\u0107 also pointed at her because he knew her from the battalion. The Gestapo separated the young woman and after Huskovi\u0107’s initial identification of people, they brought her in front of a row of lined-up men and asked her to identify communist fighters. There were other fighters and illegal workers there whom Huskovi\u0107 didn’t know but Raca did. However, the brave woman walked proudly and decisively in front of the line, looked each one in the eye, without flinching or giving anyone away. The Gestapo forced her to pass in front of the line twice, hoping for success, but Raca remained defiantly silent. Enraged enemies\u2026 they started beating her. Finally, they roughly grabbed her, threw her into a truck, and took her to prison.”<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

Mostar residents also fought in many other units of the NOVJ (People's Liberation Army of Yugoslavia) and among the ranks of the activists of the National Liberation War in Mostar and other cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina... According to the records of the organization SUBNOR Mostar, every third citizen was an activist of the National Liberation War, 670 fighters were killed, 1517 were victims of fascist terror, and 206 were civilian war victims. Those of us who were 17, 18 years old, some seemed old even though they were not older than 25. The ones over 30 were rare. There were girls and boys with different characteristics and temperaments, robust and calm, talkative and silent, recklessly brave and rational, ordinary and above-average, semi-literate and university-educated, workers and highly skilled craftsmen, high school students and university students, skilled singers and those who couldn't carry a tune, jokers and serious-minded individuals. From all our nations and religions: Muslims, Croats, Serbs, Jews, Orthodox Christians, Catholics, Muslims, Jews, atheists, and semi-atheists. Some were from straight from Mostar and others from the surrounding locations, from Konjic and outside Konjic.\" (Hercegovina Magazine No. 7, p. 238)\r\n\r\nGroups of new fighters arrived from Mostar every 10-15 days, and the Unit quickly grew into a solid military force. The guides for the groups from Mostar were Mehmed Arap, Vasa Maslo, Serif Buri\u0107, Husa Orman, Vojo Ivani\u0161evi\u0107, and Pero Krajina, who were among the bravest and most resourceful fighters. The groups regularly brought not only weapons but also medical supplies, sugar for the hospital, writing materials, large quantities of paper, books taken from the National Library (which formed the library at Borci), and other supplies for the needs of the Unit.
