“The battles fought by the units of the Division from March 5 to 8, 1945, undoubtedly rank among the most difficult and bloodiest of all the battles the Division fought on its nearly two-year-long war path. The enemy’s persistence and the density of fire, the unfamiliarity with frontal clashes (in dense formations) and the natural environment, the lack of tools for digging trenches, the cold and frost on snow over 2 meters deep, as well as difficulties in supply (no hot meals could be delivered to the positions), evacuating the wounded, and the lack of sleep – these were very harsh obstacles that the fighters faced. The significance of Ivan-sedlo as a crucial position, the intensity of events in a narrow space, and their drama made the fighters – once again – attempt to surpass their own strength.
